چکیده

Cell placement is an important phase of current VLSI circuit design styles such as standard cell, gate array, and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Although nondeterministic algorithms such as Simulated Annealing (SA) were successful in solving this problem, they are known to be slow. In this paper, a neural network algorithm is proposed that produces solutions as good as SA in substantially less time. This algorithm is based on Mean Field Annealing (MFA) technique, which was successfully applied to various combinatorial optimization problems. A MFA formulation for the cell placement problem is derived which can easily be applied to all VLSI design styles. To demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is applicable in practice, a detailed formulation for the FPGA design style is derived, and the layouts of several benchmark circuits are generated. The performance of the proposed cell placement algorithm is evaluated in comparison with commercial automated circuit design software Xilinx Automatic Place and Route (APR) which uses SA technique. Performance evaluation is conducted using ACM/SIGDA Design Automation benchmark circuits. Experimental results indicate that the proposed MFA algorithm produces comparable results with APR. However, MFA is almost 20 times faster than APR on the average.q 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A two-level Hamming network for high performance associative memory

This paper presents an analysis of a two-level decoupled Hamming network, which is a high performance discrete-time/discrete-state associative memory model. The two-level Hamming memory generalizes the Hamming memory by providing for local Hamming distance computations in the first level and a voting mechanism in the second level. In this paper, we study the effect of system dimension, window s...

Modularity, evolution, and the binding problem: a view from stability theory

Any biological object, and specifically the brain, is the result of evolution. Evolution proceeds by accumulation and combination of stable intermediate states-as is well known, survival of the fittest really means survival of the stable. Simple examples abound: for instance, human emotional response involves both a fast archaic loop bypassing the cortex, and a slower cortical loop; motion cont...

Extracting regression rules from neural networks

This paper proposes a new framework and method for extracting regression rules from neural networks trained with multivariate data containing both nominal and numeric variables. Each regression rule is expressed as a pair of a logical formula on the conditional part over nominal variables and a polynomial equation on the action part over numeric variables. The proposed extraction method first g...

Intrinsic generalization analysis of low dimensional representations

Low dimensional representations of images impose equivalence relations in the image space; the induced equivalence class of an image is named as its intrinsic generalization. The intrinsic generalization of a representation provides a novel way to measure its generalization and leads to more fundamental insights than the commonly used recognition performance, which is heavily influenced by the ...

Explanation of the "virtual input" phenomenon

We write this letter to comment on the "virtual input" phenomenon reported by Thaler (Neural Networks, 8(1) (1995) 55-65). The author attributed the phenomenon to the network's ability to perform pattern classification and completion, and reported that pruning probability affects the number of virtual inputs observed. Our independent study of Thaler's results, however, reveals a simpler explana...
